It was five years ago when I had my first panic attack. It was so frightening because I had no idea what was happening to me or why. I was in a restaurant with friends, a situation I’d enjoyed many times before, when it began. I felt unbelievably tense and my heart was pounding away nineteen to the dozen. A friend had to take me home and I hid in my room for the rest of the afternoon, terrified of what had happened but not knowing why.
Every few weeks I started to experience similar occurences. Sometimes in public and sometimes even at home for no apparent reason. Eventually I went to my doctor who told me I had an ‘anxiety disorder’ and the only treatment was taking daily pills.
Well I tried that for a while but whilst it seemed to help I felt it was no good for me in the long term because I was feeling sluggish and felt the medication was draining the life out of me. I certainly didn’t want to get addicted to taking pills for the rest of my life.
I stopped taking the pills but the fear of an attack happening at any time made a big impact on my life. I was beginning to fear being in any social situation. I even worried about driving to work in case an attack left me stranded in the traffic, unable to drive.
So, I decided to do my own research on the Internet for alternative ways to cope with my anxiety without drugs. There seemed to be a lot of advice about and some of it helped a little. The real breakthrough came, however, when I discovered an E-book by a man named Joe Barry.
